Amman, Jan. 26 (Petra) -- The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization on Monday concluded its "Environmental Wetlands for Sustainable Agriculture in Jordan" project, implemented in partnership with the Greater Amman Municipality.

According to a statement issued by the organization, the project focused on establishing artificial wetlands in two children’s parks in the capital. The systems rely on natural biological processes that integrate specific plants, gravel, and microorganisms to treat greywater and enable its safe reuse. The closing ceremony highlighted the initiative’s success in employing natural filtration systems to help address water scarcity challenges in the Kingdom.

FAO Representative Nabil Assaf said the project demonstrates the effectiveness of low-cost, decentralized solutions in urban and community settings. He noted that ecological wetlands go beyond water provision, serving as a practical model for climate resilience and as an educational platform for families to promote environmental stewardship and the circular economy.

Deputy Mayor for Health and Agriculture Yassar Khaitan said the Greater Amman Municipality values pioneering initiatives that support sustainable development in the capital and enhance residents’ quality of life.

He underlined the municipality’s commitment to sustainable urban development and to strengthening partnerships with relevant stakeholders, noting the project’s success in delivering multiple environmental and social benefits, including the protection of local biodiversity and the improvement of public recreational spaces.
